California Redwood Song

from Picture Postcards by C.D. Onofrio

about

The first time I stood among the redwood it was a majestic experience craning my neck back to see the Heights that the trees reached. Standing amongst the stillness that each of these beings exuded.
when I returned home I learned that, while redwoods can reach over 300 feet the roots are quite shallow. The roots, instead of reaching deep into the ground, reach out to one another and entwine. In this way they hold each other and brace each other in the strong winds or the floods that come their way.

I suppose that this is a hopeful metaphor looking around and seeing the events of the world - fires sweeping and uncontrollable, sea levels rising, torrential storms. I believe that we must work together through this that we must learn to work together and do better at working together. So that when we are faced with the strong winds of adversity, while we might bend, we will not break, we will not fall.
I hope that you have with you those whose roots are entangled with yours
I hope that you have those with you that help you stand tall
I hope you reach towards the dreams of your imagination that fill the skies of your mind like clouds
and if you do not have those roots that entangle with yours, let this song be that

lyrics

here we go on a winding road/ where nobody knows/ the forest grows/ i press my nose against the window/ from sitting under the tree/ to running cross the country/ trying to be free/ where u.r.me
i will not cut you down/ i will help you to stand tall/ underneath the ground/ we're connected through this all

now i cant trace my roots/ i dont know whee im from/ but i know who i am/ what will i become
i met a redwood/ as old as islam/ it told me i could grow tall/ even though my roots are shallow

the tree of life know/ in what will follow/ the music still flows/ the music will keep playing

i talk to death at the side of the mountain/ the miserable mound of the skeleton fountain/ these are the words that death returns
the god of death is the lord of the dance
skeleton hands write my epitaph
your skeleton army, does not alarm me.
